VAT RELIEF FOR DISABLED PEOPLE

To get the product VAT free your disability has to qualify. For VAT purposes, you’re disabled or have a long-term illness if:

  • you have a physical or mental impairment that affects your ability to carry out everyday activities, for example blindness
  • you have a condition that’s treated as chronic sickness.
  • you’re terminally ill

You don’t qualify if you’re elderly but able-bodied, or if you’re temporarily disabled.

If you’re disabled or have a long-term illness, you won’t be charged VAT on products designed or adapted for your own personal or domestic use. Also, you won’t be charged VAT on:

  • The installation and any extra work needed as part of this
  • Repairs or Maintenance
  • Spare parts or Accessories
  • The product and your disability have to qualify.

QUALIFYING PRODUCTS OR SERVICES

Your supplier can tell you but only products designed or adapted solely for a disability qualify. Without the item being designed or adapted we cannot offer the exemption.

Please contact us if you are unsure your illness or condition qualifies and a staff member will be more than happy to assist by confirming any queries with the HMRC Vat office.

Contact us if you are a Qualifying Charity and we can arrange the VAT exemption.

PLEASE NOTE: There are severe penalties for making a false declaration. If you are in any doubt about your own eligibility, or the eligibility of the goods you are buying, you should get advice from any local VAT office before signing this declaration. If you are found not to be eligible after receiving the VAT discount , you will be become immediately liable to pay the VAT amount owed plus interest from the date of sale.

It may not be possible for a disabled person to sign a declaration. In such cases the signature of a parent, guardian or doctor is acceptable. Similarly, it is accepted that goods or services are supplied to a disabled person when bought by a relative, guardian, or trustee acting on a disabled person’s behalf.
