Buying a Tricycle: Our Essential Guide

Getting on three wheels for the first time is an exciting journey, but it can also feel like stepping into the unknown. Everyone has their own unique reason for wanting to take the plunge, whether it’s due to a health condition or the desire to maintain independence in older age, perhaps it’s a more eco-conscious choice for shorter journeys or simply the lure of adventure on a trike.

At Jorvik, we understand that everyone who steps into our showroom or visits our website has their own story and individual needs. We pride ourselves on building tricycles that stand the test of time and provide the safest features for users. Each model shown on our website has a full specification of components, including the frame, drivetrain, brakes, wheels, and more.

If you have any questions about a particular feature, our expert team is on hand and happy to help. Just contact us, and we’ll do our best to answer any queries.

Choosing the right tricycle isn’t just about buying a bike—it’s about finding the perfect fit.

Key features to look out for

Each individual component in a tricycle contributes to the overall quality of the product. Some tricycles are made using cheaper or even unsuitable parts, which should be avoided for both the longevity of your tricycle and your own safety.

We’ve put together an overview of some key components of a tricycle, along with advice on what to look out for when making a purchase.

Tyres

Tricycle tyres endure the most wear and tear, so it's crucial to choose the right ones. Ensure they can handle the weight and have a high load rating. Puncture protection is key, especially for off-road use.

Good things to look out for:

  • Puncture-resistant tyres (e.g. CST/Kenda)
  • Tires that are load-rated for tricycles
  • Tyres with a silver reflector line or other visibility feature for safety

Things to avoid:

  • Tyres without sufficient load rating
  • No puncture protection, especially for off-road use

All Jorvik trikes come with CST/Kenda puncture-resistant tyres, offering durability, reliability, and a silver reflector line for added safety. This highly reduces the chances of getting a puncture and stopping your adventure in its tracks.

Gears

Smooth gear shifts and reliability are essential to avoid damage. Many tricycles use derailleur gears, which hang low and are prone to damage, requiring regular maintenance.

Good things to look out for:

  • An internal gear hub system
  • Gears positioned with higher ground clearance to avoid damage
  • The ability to change gears while stationary
  • Gear with lower maintenance requirements
  • A trusted brand, such as Shimano

Things to avoid:

  • Derailleur gears as they hang low and are prone to damage
  • Any gear system that requires regular cleaning and tuning

Jorvik trikes feature internal gear hubs, positioned higher for protection. These gears can be shifted while stationary, making them perfect for stop-and-go trips. With the added weight of a tricycle, this system enhances usability and convenience.

Battery

The battery is a key component in electric tricycles. Poor-quality batteries can suffer from performance issues and safety risks, like fire hazards.

Good things to look out for:

  • Reputable brands such as (Panasonic, LG batteries, or Samsung cells)
  • The battery should be rigorously tested and approved for safety and durability
  • EN numbers to specify safety and performance standards have been met
  • CE marking showing that safety, health and environmental protection requires have been adhered to

Things to avoid:

  • Unbranded or unspecified battery as they have a risk of poor performance and could be fire hazards

Always choose a trike with a reputable battery brand and EN numbers. Jorvik trike batteries are made with either Panasonic, LG or Samsung cells, which are rigorously tested for reliability and long-lasting performance. The same applies to our battery chargers.

Brakes

Reliable brakes are crucial, especially for heavier, power-driven e-trikes. A smooth braking system is vital for safety.

Avoid trikes with basic rim brakes or single braking systems, as they may lack stopping power. We recommend hydraulic disc brakes, which stop all three wheels independently and work effectively in wet conditions, ensuring a safe stop every time. In the case of those with cable disc brakes, those with two-wheel discs are preferable to give them more balanced braking. It’s worth being aware of trikes that come with hydraulic brakes but use low quality components, these won’t provide the same performance or offer the same longevity.

Good things to look out for:

  • Hydraulic disc brakes for powerful, smooth stopping
  • Breaks should be effective in wet conditions
  • Independent braking on more than one wheel

Things to avoid:

  • Basic rim brakes with limited stopping power
Motor

A high-quality motor is crucial for powering your trike. Cheaper motors can overheat, lack torque control, and cause jerky rides or fail to cut out when braking.

A good-quality motor is essential for providing the power your trike requires with reliable performance. Cheap motors can lead to several problems, including overheating, lack of torque, and a jerky ride.

Good things to look out for:

  • A high-quality motor from a trusted brand (e.g. Bafang, Bosch, Samsung)
  • Strong torque for hills and heavy loads
  • Smooth pedal assistance
  • The motor should cut out correctly when braking

Jorvik trikes use Bafang motors, known for their strong torque, making them ideal for hills, heavy loads, and starting from a standstill. They also provide smooth pedal assistance for a seamless ride. Bosch and Samsung are two other trusted brands that offer high-quality motors.

Power

Another important factor related to the motor is the power it provides. Electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) regulations state that, to drive an e-bike or e-trike on the road, the engine power cannot exceed 250 watts.

The throttle must also not exceed 4 mph and pedal assist cannot exceed 15.5mph. If this isn’t the case, the trike isn’t road legal and any insurance will be invalidated.

Things that make a trike road legal:

  • Motor no larger than 250w
  • Throttle doesn’t exceed 4mph
  • Pedal assist doesn’t exceed 15.5mph

Things to be wary of:

  • Engines over 250w can only be ridden on private land with no public access and the landowner’s permission
  • Any retailer who advises “plugging the throttle in”. This means connecting the throttle to the e-trike’s controller, allowing full control of power without pedalling

Important Questions to Ask When Buying a Tricycle

Whether you’re shopping with us or elsewhere, there are several questions that we think you should consider asking during the buying process. Much like buying a new car, your tricycle purchase is an important one, and you need to make sure you’re not only buying quality but also receiving the same level of service after your purchase, should any issues arise.

We’ve put together a few key questions we believe are essential when buying a tricycle—along with the Jorvik Tricycles answer.

“Are your tricycles certified?”
The two key things to look for here are European Norm (EN) Certification and the European Conformity (CE) Marking. You’ve likely seen these before—EN Certification indicates that a product meets the expected safety, reliability, and quality standards, while the CE Marking is a visible sign of compliance with EU safety, health, and environmental regulations.

At Jorvik Tricycles, we hold all the necessary certifications, ensuring that every product we offer is fully certified and compliant.

How do you resolve any issues during the warranty period?
Even with the highest-quality products and meticulous quality control, things can occasionally go wrong. While this is rare, it’s important to have a warranty that not only covers your tricycle but is also backed by a clear and straightforward process for resolving any issues. Ask your salesperson what steps they would take if something were to go wrong. If they’re anything like us, they’ll arrange for someone to inspect your trike or collect it as soon as possible, and work promptly to resolve the issue.

We offer a 24-month parts warranty on all tricycles purchased from January 2023, covering non-consumable parts. There is also a lifetime warranty on the tricycle frame. Full warranty terms can be found in section six of our Terms of Service.

Can you return it if test ridden?
Even if you’ve spent months deliberating over your tricycle purchase — perhaps even taking a few test laps around our track — sometimes it just doesn’t feel quite right once you’re out in the real world. There’s no shame in a change of heart. However, it’s important to check the seller’s returns policy, especially once the tricycle has been ridden on the road. Many sellers won’t accept a return if the trike has been removed from its packaging or ridden at all. Furthermore, many eBay and Amazon sellers ship directly from China or use drop shipping warehouses in Europe, so returns — if accepted — can end up being very costly.

At Jorvik, we understand that it can take some time to truly get a feel for your tricycle. That’s why we offer our Jorvik ‘Try Cycle’ goodwill guarantee, giving you 14 days to try it out and return it if it’s not quite right for you. Full information can be found in section eight of our Terms of Service.

Do you service tricycles?
Getting your tricycle serviced is essential for its upkeep and ensuring it stays in top working condition. We recommend servicing your trike at least once a year to help prevent issues and keep the warranty valid. If your point of purchase doesn’t offer servicing or is too far away, it may cause issues when it comes to keeping your tricycle in perfect working condition.

At Jorvik, we have a large network of mobile technicians who can come to your home at your convenience to service your tricycle. Alternatively, we’ll happily collect your tricycle for servicing, bring it back to our workshop, and return it to you afterwards. The cost of this varies depending on your location.

Where are you based, and do you offer aftersales support?
If you’re buying online or over the phone, we recommend finding out where the company is based, where their aftersales support operates from, and how you can contact them. If you experience an issue or simply have a question, it’s important to get a quick response.

We’re proud to be a UK-based company, with our customer service team based right here with us. That means we’re easily reachable by phone, live chat, or email—and if you’d like to visit us in person, you’re always welcome at our showroom. Our core office and showroom opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

We’ve had several occasions where customers have been out and about—even walking in the middle of nowhere—and called us with a technical issue. In many cases, we’re able to resolve the problem over the phone and get them back on their way within minutes.

Are you a member of the Bicycle Association (BA)?
The Bicycle Association (BA) is the trade association for the UK cycle industry. They exist to represent the UK cycle industry to the government and public, as well as play an active role in growing the popularity and accessibility of cycling in the country.

Being a member of the BA demonstrates a commitment to being a part of the wider cycling community in the UK, as well as upholding the highest standards of quality and compliance to technical requirements. Membership is a good sign that you’re buying a tricycle from someone who really cares about providing the best product.

We’re proud to say that Jorvik Tricycles is a long-standing registered BA member.
