Carol's Story
Following a traumatic brain injury Carol struggled with her mobility and decided to invest in an adult tricycle. We spoke with Carol about how her adult tricycle has helped her regain her independence.
Why did Carol need a three-wheel bike?
Carol suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2021, and after a couple of months in hospital, she was discharged home to continue rehab. As she was living with significant cognitive difficulties she struggled with her mobility and was unable to leave home alone.
Before her brain injury, Carol was a reasonably fit 50-something-year-old. However, as she was then virtually housebound she began to feel very isolated. She worked with her neurological rehabilitation team to improve her mobility and confidence in walking. She found it hard to walk very far as she would get a lot of pain in her feet.
Because of this, Carol was recommended by her physio to try cycling and was referred to an adaptive cycling group. Carol still found it difficult to balance and was unable to manage on two wheels. She then had a go on a few different adult tricycles and was so pleased with how much she enjoyed cycling on three wheels!
‘’When I first tried an adult trike I thought it was brilliant! I could pedal easily and without the foot pain I experienced when I was walking. It meant I could travel further and for longer pain-free’’
Our electric tricycles are designed to provide individuals with mobility issues the opportunity to cycle longer distances more comfortably. Cycling itself is a relatively low-impact workout, and with the added assistance of the electric motor, riders can go further for longer periods.
How did Carol hear about Jorvik Tricycles?
After her first session on an adult trike, she knew she needed to get her own. Carol knew she found her tricycle provider when she first heard Jorvik’s story. James Walker, founder of Jorvik Tricycles, inspired her with his efforts to enable his father to continue cycling despite his Parkinson's diagnosis. She is also Yorkshire-born and bred so the fact that Jorvik’s tricycles are assembled in Yorkshire also made them more appealing!
How has an adult tricycle helped Carol?
Since having her tricycle, Carol has been able to regain the freedom that her disability took from her. She has been able to get out and about, taking away the loneliness and isolation she felt.
‘’I feel fitter already and so much happier than I was. It feels so very sturdy and well-built too. After a few first tentative rides, I am gaining confidence and riding a bit further each time. Quite simply, I feel like I’m living again!’’
If you have difficulty maintaining balance while cycling on a traditional bike, a three-wheel bike may be the safest solution for you. Electric adult trikes offer extra stability, motor assistance and confidence to help you fully enjoy cycling again.
