Riding an electric tricycle offers the best of both worlds – a comfy ride, steady as you like, and you're doing your bit for the planet. But when you're out on the road on three wheels, things are a little different compared to riding a standard two-wheeled bike.

Did you know that in the UK, you can ride an electric bike or trike from the age of 14 without needing a licence, registration, tax, or insurance? That makes exploring on an electric tricycle incredibly accessible and hassle-free – but it also means it's all the more important for riders to ensure they’re operating their trike as safely as possible.

Top Tips for Riding Safely on the Road

So, you’ve found the perfect trike for you. It’s comfortable, has all the power you need, and makes getting around town easy. However, sharing the road with cars and other vehicles can be a bit of an adjustment, so it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with a few key safety tips beforehand.

At Jorvik, we're all about making your trike adventures safe and enjoyable. So, if you're itching to take your electric three-wheeler out and about, here are some easy-to-follow tips to keep you rolling safely:

Mind Your Width

That extra wheel gives you fantastic stability, but it also makes you a bit wider than a standard bike. Keep this in mind when weaving through traffic or navigating narrower spaces. A quick glance back can help avoid accidental bumps or scrapes.

Signal Your Intent

Our trikes come with built-in lights, which is a great start. But adding indicators is a brilliant way to show drivers and other road users which way you're planning to turn. It's all about making your intentions crystal clear.

We sell USB indicators that fit directly on the front or rear basket or fenders. For more information, click here.

Embrace the Cycle Lane

If there's a cycle lane going your way, make use of it! These dedicated paths are designed with cyclists in mind, offering a safer route away from the main flow of traffic.

Plan Your Journey

Especially when you're just starting out, it’s best to stick to routes you know well or opt for quieter roads. Familiar surroundings help build your confidence and allow you to better anticipate potential hazards.

Mirror, Mirror

Adding mirrors is a simple yet effective way to boost your awareness. Being able to see what’s coming up behind you – without having to turn your head – makes a big difference to your safety and peace of mind.

We sell both round mirrors and oblong mirrors that go directly on to your tricycle.

Shine Bright

It's important to be visible, especially when it's a bit dull out, or when it's getting dark. Chuck on a bright jacket, high visibility vest or some reflective bands, and always make sure your lights are switched on.

Helmet Hero

We know it's common sense, but we'll say it again: always wear a helmet. It's a must for anyone on two wheels or three, and it can save you from a nasty knock if an accident happens.

We recommend the Oxford Metro V helmet which comes in 5 colours and with a rear light for extra visibility. Click here for more information.

At Jorvik, we stock a wide range of tricycle accessories, from mirrors and indicators to helmets, tools and other safety equipment. Ensuring you have everything you need onboard before heading out on your trike is a sure-fire way to give you the best preparation in the event that something does go wrong.

Make Sure Your Trike is Road Legal

It’s also important to make sure your trike is road legal. The good news? All our 250W Jorvik electric trikes meet the necessary requirements, so you can ride with confidence knowing you're good to go.

To be considered road legal in the UK, an electric bike or tricycle must meet the criteria of an Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle (EAPC):

Pedals Required: The bike/trike must have pedals that are functional and can be used to propel it. The electric motor should only assist when the rider is pedalling.

Maximum Power Output: The electric motor must have a maximum continuous rated power output of no more than 250 watts.

Speed Limit for Assistance: The electric motor must not be able to propel the bike/trike when it's travelling at more than 15.5 miles per hour (25 km/h).

Electric trikes open up a world of enjoyable and practical travel for so many people, no matter their ability. Whether you're dreaming of leisurely weekend rides or need a helping hand with your daily commute, understanding and following these simple road safety tips will help ensure every journey is a happy and secure one.
