Many of our electric tricycles come with a thumb throttle, designed to give riders a gentle boost from the motor when they need it. In its standard form, this “walk mode” throttle helps you move at a slow, steady pace without pedalling - ideal for setting off from a standstill, taking a quick breather, enjoying a coffee on the go, or simply pottering along on flat ground. It isn’t powerful enough for hills, and it’s different from the support you get while pedalling, but most riders find it incredibly handy for those little moments when they want the trike to do the work for them.

However, some riders want the reassurance of a throttle that can do more - helping with hills, offering support if they suddenly need to stop pedalling, or allowing them to travel further with less effort.

That’s why, at Jorvik, we’re now able to offer type-approved throttle derestriction on selected models. With a few modifications and fully independent testing, your tricycle can legally use the throttle alone at around 10–15 mph, giving you a smoother, more confident and more flexible riding experience. On very steep inclines you may still need to pedal, but for most journeys, the derestricted throttle offers an extra layer of comfort and control when you need it most.

What Modifications Are Needed?

Before your trike can be submitted for type approval, a few safety adjustments are required:

      Upgraded headlights

      Upgraded breaks

Electronic upgrade to adhere to new requirements

Once these are in place, the tricycle is submitted to the DVSA for independent testing. You will receive a certificate, similar to an MOT certificate, confirming that your individual trike has been tested and passed. However, unlike a car MOT, this process only needs to be completed once.

Safety and Compliance

We take your safety very seriously. The type-approved derestriction process is fully compliant with legal requirements, and we’ve partnered with our local Trading Standards service to ensure all standards are met.

Importantly, the motor power does not increase - it remains at 250W and the top speed will not exceed 15.5 mph with assistance from the motor. After type approval, the tricycle is still classed as a bicycle, so there’s no need for a licence, insurance, or taxation to ride on the road. Helmets are strongly recommended for safety, but they are not a legal requirement.

The process takes approximately 6-8 weeks from submission and costs £490.00. For many riders, this is a worthwhile investment for the added convenience and independence that throttle derestriction provides.

Benefits of Throttle Derestriction

  1. Effortless Riding – Perfect for riders who may have limited strength, mobility, or stamina. You can use the throttle to move off smoothly from a standstill or give your legs a break while riding.
  2. Hill Assistance – Hills can be challenging, especially when carrying shopping or equipment. Throttle derestriction gives you that extra push without pedalling continuously.
  3. Increased Freedom – Being able to ride without pedalling allows more riders to enjoy longer journeys with confidence, especially older riders or those with health conditions.
  4. Legal and Safe – The process is officially DVSA tested, fully legal, and compliant with all relevant UK standards, giving peace of mind for both new and experienced riders.

Who Can Benefit?
