The Benefits of Adult Tricycles for Disabled Riders

Disability can affect anyone at any time and can come about in a wide variety of ways. When you or a loved one is affected, it can often feel like life has to stop and the way of living that you once knew must change. However, this doesn’t have to be the case. While some disabilities may lead to short-term limitations – there are ways to continue doing the things you love.
Accessibility has improved vastly in the UK over the last decade, but whilst there is still work to do, as a country we can be proud of where we are. Many of the traditional mobility products are well known and widely available, but there’s much more out there. That’s where electric tricycles come in. An alternative to an e-bike when looking for a power boost, and a mobility scooter when seeking stability.
Why try a tricycle for disabled adults?
At Jorvik, our tricycles are designed for everyone to use, but a big part of our story is creating something that those with disabilities, mobility issues and illnesses can use to improve their lifestyle. Here are a few reasons why an adult tricycle can make a big difference.
Providing powered independence
An adult tricycle gives you the opportunity to travel freely, whether that’s to the shop or to get out and see friends. Journeys that are a little too far to walk or simply aren’t possible without transport can suddenly become an option again. Our tricycles are designed in a way that supports those with disabilities and mobility issues, keeping in mind that all disabilities are different. Maintaining independence is key for anyone who has mobility limitations and struggles, and our tricycles give you the opportunity to be mobile without having to rely on anybody else.
More speed, more assistance
Our tricycles come with a range of options when it comes to motors, including derestricted models, meaning you can control the level of power, pedal assistance and speed. Many of our models have varying levels of pedal assistance; the rider can simply select how much assistance they require – making them ideal for riders of all abilities. Take our JET-E16 model, choose your pedal assist level from 1 to 5 and you’re effortlessly on the move. Electric assist means you’ll never need to increase pedalling tempo or change gear. When you want to go faster or need more assistance on hills, simply press the ‘+’ button.
Increased safety and stability
By their very nature, tricycles offer greatly increased stability compared to a bicycle simply due to having three wheels instead of two. This means that an electric tricycle can much more stability, safety and security, especially if you struggle with balance. This means a tricycle can greatly reduce the likelihood of a fall. If you’re completely stationary, or getting on and off, you don’t need to rely on your own balance to keep you safe and secure as you would have to with a traditional bike. This extra stability can be an absolute life-changer for many users, we see a lot of customers come through our showroom who’d long given up on the idea of cycling again until they discovered our tricycles.
A key to the great outdoors
We all know how important fresh air and freedom is, and this is something than can feel like it’s been taken away for those with disabilities. You may feel like getting out and about can be difficult or sometimes even dread the feeling of having to arrange transport or help to get out. Electric tricycles are designed to help you feel like you have access to the outdoors, the fresh air and movement whenever you want. A model like our JMT-16, combines the low threshold ease required to get on with thick tyres for greater grip when venturing off the beaten track. Getting outdoors has huge mental and psychical health benefits, meaning an adult tricycle makes for a fantastic way to exercise in a way that’s enjoyable and genuinely improves your health. It’s a form of low-impact exercise that can be hugely beneficial and really change lives.
