The joy of heading out on three wheels is hard to match, offering tricycle users freedom and a fantastic way to keep fit and healthy. Just like cycling, the beauty of tricycle riding is that it’s something that can be enjoyed either solo or with others.

Riding with a partner can make your journeys more exciting and enjoyable. Whether your partner is joining you on a bicycle or they have their own electric tricycle, hitting the open road is a great way to spend quality time together while getting some exercise and fresh air.

We’ve put together some of our top tips for getting set up to ride with a partner.

Three Essential Tips to Get Started

  1. Find Your Wheels

You may already have discovered the beauty of life on three wheels and have your very own Jorvik trike, or perhaps you've seen the boost in independence that an electric tricycle has given a partner or friend. Either way, you’ll need the right gear before heading out – and that starts with a tricycle.

Take a look through our options online – or even better, pop by our Jorvik showroom to speak with our expert team and find out which model is right for you. Whether it’s a mountain trike or an electric folding tricycle, we have a range of options to ensure the tricycle you choose is the one that suits your needs best.

  1. Plan the Perfect Ride

There’s no need to tackle a cross-country challenge as your first ride. Agree on a beginner-friendly route that’s scenic and not too demanding. If you're eager to push your limits, remember that what may feel easy for one rider could be challenging for another – so choose a route that suits both of you.

Choosing a quiet and picturesque route can be a great way to get a change of scenery and see some sights. Consider a beach tricycle ride or heading to a forest or place of natural beauty, most are equipped with cycling areas which make them easily accessible for trike riders and will enable you to get out and see more with a little power assistance.

We’ve put together ten of our favourite National Trust sites across the UK to help give you some inspiration for planning your next ride. You can read it and plan your next ride here.

  1. Put Safety First

Safety is paramount when riding together. Adult tricycles, due to their width and stability features, often take up more space on the road. Plan your route to avoid high-traffic areas if you're riding socially. Quiet lanes, cycle paths, and park trails are ideal.

Consider ride length as well. It’s easy to lose each other on longer routes – whether due to differing paces or traffic. Have a communication plan in case you get separated. Encourage your partner or group to wait periodically or at pre-determined checkpoints.

We put together a guide to safe road riding on your tricycle which will prepare you to hit the road.

  1. Get into a Routine

Riding with a partner or group can be a great motivator. Whether you're heading out with your partner, a friend or a trike club, try to establish a routine. Choose a regular day to meet up – weekly, monthly, or whatever suits your schedule.

Getting into a routine can be tricky at first, especially when exercise is involved. The beauty of an electric trike, however, is that it allows you to ride as hard or as easily as you like. Whether it’s a short trip down the road or popping your folding trike into the motorhome for a weekend getaway – hold each other accountable and stick to your plans.

The Benefits of Riding with a Partner

Regain Independence with Limited Mobility

If your partner, friend, or even yourself has had health issues that have affected mobility, getting on an electric trike can be the ideal way to share an activity with each other without the worry about being able to keep up with each other or find something that suits both physical ability levels.

At Jorvik Tricycles, we’ve seen countless people come into our showroom with a partner and find themselves literally stunned that they’ve finally found a way to regain some of their independence and enjoy their time together.

Enjoy a Physical and Mental Health Boost

If you already have an electric trike, you’ll know that riding is exhilarating – especially if you’ve struggled with traditional bikes due to balance or support issues. But there’s no greater feeling than riding with a partner. We’re lucky to have a fantastic community of Jorvik trike riders who meet and ride together – you can even find a Jorvik Tricycle Riders group on Facebook.

Riding with a partner or group can be an excellent way to socialise, especially if you’re looking to get out more and meet new people. Wellbeing often improves through shared activities, with both the social interaction and physical exercise contributing to better mental and physical health. Riding solo can be fun, but sharing the experience often brings a deeper sense of fulfilment.
