Tricycle Storage: How to Safely and Securely Store Your Tricycle

You’ve browsed our range of tricycles, taken a test ride in the showroom, and now your brand-new Jorvik Tricycles trike has arrived – it’s an exciting time. Having invested in a tricycle, it’s important to make sure you look after it. From regular servicing to chain maintenance, there’s a lot to consider.
Securing your tricycle from theft is especially important. Unfortunately, crime can happen anywhere, and electric bikes and tricycles are often targeted due to their value and resale potential. According to the most recent ONS statistics, there were approximately 203,000 bicycle thefts in the UK between March 2023 and March 2024 – with e-bikes and tricycles making up a growing proportion of these. Although tricycle theft is much less common due to their size and niche market resale, it’s always best to make sure you have the best possible deterrents in place for potential thieves.
How Do You Secure an Adult Tricycle?
There are several ways to keep your adult tricycle safe and secure. Thanks to the folding feature on many of our tricycles, they can be reduced to a much smaller size – making them easier to store discreetly.
Garage or Shed
If you have a garage or garden shed, it’s ideal for overnight storage. Just make sure the building can be securely locked. If there are windows, cover your tricycle to keep it out of sight – electric trikes can be tempting targets if visible.
Locked Up Outside
If outdoor storage space is limited, you may need to store your tricycle in a back garden or on a porch. If so, it’s essential to use a strong, high-quality lock. We stock several Oxford locking mechanisms, including chain-and-padlock options and high-security shackle locks. If your trike will be stored outdoors, we also recommend using a rain and weather cover for added protection from both theft and the elements.
Keep It in Plain Sight
Your tricycle is perfect for everyday adventures – whether you’re popping to the shops or meeting a friend for coffee. When you park up, be sure to take precautions so your trike is still there when you return. Lock it in a public area with good visibility (and ideally within your view), as this can deter opportunistic thieves.
Lock Your Wheels
When securing your tricycle in public, always ensure it is properly locked. Simply thread your lock through the wheel spokes and secure it to a solid anchor point. This method is especially handy if you're quickly popping into a shop.
Remove Your Accessories
While you might not want to carry every accessory with you, it's worth removing anything of value that could attract a thief. For example, if your phone is mounted to the handlebars, take it with you. Larger items like cargo bags are generally safe to leave attached, but make sure they don’t contain valuables.
Get Insured
Although we all hope it never happens, it’s wise to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Even the best security measures may not stop a determined thief. That’s why we’ve partnered with ETA Insurance – the UK’s longest-established specialist cycle insurance provider – to offer 30 days’ free insurance and breakdown cover with every new tricycle purchase. You can find out more here.
What to Do if Your Tricycle is Stolen?
We sincerely hope this never happens to anyone in the Jorvik Tricycles community – but if it does, it’s important to act quickly. Report the theft to the police as soon as possible and contact your insurance provider to start your claim. Every Jorvik Tricycle has a unique serial code, which can be found under the Jorvik badge on the head tube. Make a note of this and store it somewhere safely, as it’ll be vital in identifying your tricycle if recovered by authorities.
With luck, your trike may be recovered. But if not, your insurance should help you get back on the road without too much disruption. In that case, we’d be more than happy to welcome you back to one of our showrooms and help you choose your next tricycle – though of course, we hope that won’t be the reason we next see you!
