Discovering a New Hobby at 88: David’s Story
Staying active and independent can become more challenging with age, especially when health conditions begin to affect mobility. But for David, an 88-year-old Jorvik customer from Poole in Dorset, an adult tricycle opened the door to a whole new chapter of freedom, joy and confidence.
For most of his life, David enjoyed walking and cycling, but after developing Peripheral Neuropathy, his balance began to deteriorate. Over time, he increasingly relied on walking aids - a stick or Zimmer frame in the house, and a rollator for getting outdoors. Losing his confidence on two wheels meant cycling was no longer an option, and after worsening vision forced him to give up driving, David became dependent on family for everyday outings.
Finding a Way Back to Independence
Keen to regain his independence, David began looking for a safe way to travel from A to B without relying on others. It was his daughter who first suggested trying an electric tricycle. After his first test ride in 2021, David immediately felt the stability and reassurance that three wheels could offer.
A little research later, David discovered Jorvik Tricycles. The JMT6 caught his eye - particularly the hydraulic brakes for added control and its powerful rear motor, which gave him the confidence he could take on hills, headwinds, and daily errands with ease.
With his Jorvik tricycle, David was suddenly able to do something he feared had gone forever: enjoy the outdoors independently.
A New Lease of Life at 88
Fast forward to today, and David is out on his tricycle almost every day - whether he’s picking up shopping, visiting local spots, or enjoying a refreshing ride along the promenades in Poole and Bournemouth. In the first two years, he covered almost 2,500 miles on his e-trike!
He told us:
“My Jorvik tricycle has transformed my life and at the very least it’s great fun to ride. I live with my daughter and her family and previously I had to rely on them all the time if I didn't have my e-trike.
“My e-trike has become an essential feature of my life, giving me freedom, independence and lots of enjoyment.”
