At Jorvik Tricycles, we’re proud to promote accessibility and support those with limited mobility. Countless times, we’ve seen how an electric tricycle can help someone living with a condition or with reduced mobility, so we know just how big a difference they can make and the importance of making them available to as many people as possible.

That’s why we’ve taken the steps to become one of very few tricycle manufacturers who have our tricycle models MDR certified.

What Does MDR Certified Mean?

MDR stands for Medical Device Regulation, meaning that a product has been certified as compliant with laws that allow them to be sold as medical devices. To put that into context, a mobility scooter is MDR certified.

Many of our tricycles, especially the Jorvik Freedom, are designed in a way that positions them as a great alternative to a mobility scooter – just with increased stability and, we like to think, slightly more appealing looks. You can find out more about this comparison in our Electric Tricycle vs Mobility Scooter post. MDR certification further solidifies the fact that these tricycles are also safe and a great choice to assist those with medical needs.

Gaining MDR certification for our tricycles is a huge step forward for us and one of the main reasons for us pushing for this certification is to help make our tricycles more accessible for our customers and provide peace of mind when it comes to their effectiveness as medical devices.

How Did We Achieve MDR Certification?

MDR certification involves our tricycles being rigorously tested under increased performance and safety standards. The MDR provides a set of standards and responsibilities for regulators, who ensure that these devices are safe and effective for patients before being placed on the market.

As a manufacturer, we must also provide comprehensive clinical data and evidence that really demonstrates their safety and performance. We’re proud that all Jorvik Tricycles models have been through this process successfully.

As with anything like this, there’s a lot of work to be done to achieve this status but we’re certain of the positive impact it will have on our customers.

What are the Benefits of MDR Certification?

Naturally, the main benefit of MDR certification is in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of all Jorvik Tricycles models as medical devices. This should mean peace of mind for our customers, enabling us to hold ourselves accountable for the highest standards of quality.

The other benefit of this is that we’re now able to sell our tricycles as disability VAT exempt for those who qualify. That means a saving on the sale price of the tricycle and makes it easier for those who want to rediscover their independence to get on three wheels!

When you click on a Jorvik Tricycles model online, you’ll see the option to select ‘I am eligible for disability VAT relief’. This will then alter the price onscreen to reflect the VAT exemption. You can find out more information on our VAT exemption page.

How Do I Find Out More?

The government defines those eligible for VAT-free goods as being chronically sick or disabled, and the goods must be for your personal or domestic use. You can read the full government criteria here. If you still have questions around whether you could qualify for VAT exemption, feel free to give us a call on 01904 405338 and one of our expert team will be happy to help.

To test ride a Jorvik Tricycle, you can book a visit to either our Southampton or York showroom here.

Alternatively, we also offer home visits, where one of our tricycle experts will come to you, help you test ride a tricycle and answer any questions. You can book your home demonstration here.
