From Paralysis to Pedals: Rediscovering Freedom on Three Wheels

When Nick, a 69-year-old grandfather from East Yorkshire, got in touch, we were more than happy to help him rediscover his freedom and independence on three wheels following an accident that changed everything. This is his story and how a Jorvik trike helped him on his journey.
A Life-Changing Moment
While away celebrating his son’s wedding in February 2023, Nick collapsed unexpectedly during a trip to the toilet in the night, waking up with no recollection of what had happened. He later learned that the fall had caused significant damage to his cervical spine, and doctors warned he might never regain movement below his neck.
Refusing to let this diagnosis define him, Nick focused on rebuilding his life. He spent months in hospital and specialist spinal units, losing nearly 20 kilograms as his muscles weakened. But with determination, intensive physiotherapy and a gradual return of sensation and strength, he began to regain mobility. By autumn, he was able to stand, walk and exercise again – an incredible achievement given his early prognosis.
Returning to the Saddle
Before his accident, Nick and his wife were keen long-distance cyclists, regularly covering hundreds of miles each week. After the injury, a traditional two-wheeled bike was no longer suitable, but that did not mean his cycling adventures had to end.
In March 2025, Nick discovered Jorvik Tricycles and found that the stability and support of a three-wheeled electric tricycle could be the ideal way for him to ride again. With added balance and electric assistance, he was able to cycle safely and comfortably. He has already completed a 25-mile ride and now uses his trike to rebuild strength and maintain independence.
“Getting back out there feels incredible,” he said. “The trike gives me freedom again, and the pedalling is strengthening my legs more every week.”
