Viva Espana: Diane and James’ Take Jorvik to Spain

At Jorvik Tricycles, we’re constantly inspired by the adventures of our community of riders. Some stories make us smile, some make us laugh, and some – like that of Diana and James Wilde – remind us just how transformative an adult tricycle can be.

Diana and James, now living in Estepona on the Costa del Sol, recently shared their journey with us. It’s a story of rediscovery, independence, and the joy of cycling at any age.

Taking Back Control on Three Wheels

Diana, who had never owned a bike in her 75 years, first felt the urge to try a tricycle in 2025. During the 2020 Covid lockdown, she’d discovered walking as a great way to exercise, gather her thoughts and enjoy some outdoor time – sometimes covering up to six miles at a time. However, hip and knee issues began making walking painful, and even a short trip to the shops became a challenge.

Sitting on a park bench with a coffee, Diane decided that she would love a trike, “I really felt that could possibly give me some freedom to just get back out there again – use my legs in a different way and as cycling has a lower impact on the knees than walking it could be a win all round."

Her research led her to us at Jorvik Tricycles, which she described as “top in my estimation.” After discovering that we’d be attending a Cycling Electric Demo Day in Bath, Diana and James met the Jorvik team and experienced our tricycles firsthand.

"Although I felt quite anxious, I was also very excited at the possibility of taking back some control and regaining some kind of independence. This was the start of a new adventure. I was sold from that moment – the little girl who never had a bike could now have a trike."

Everyday Adventures in the UK

Once Diana and James had their Jorvik trikes, they quickly incorporated them into their daily lives and found that they were able to leave the car at home for many of their regular activities. Trips to local shops and supermarkets became regular outings, with the trikes’ storage bags easily holding groceries. Leisure rides with a packed lunch and tea became a favourite routine, showing that tricycles can be both practical and fun.

“A nice, packed lunch and a flask of tea and a cycle became a regular event for us – it would appear that I am a cheap date!”

A New Life in Spain

After downsizing in 2024, Diana and James fulfilled a lifelong dream: buying an apartment in Estepona, Southern Spain. Naturally, they knew trikes would be an essential part of this new chapter. We helped them upgrade to two red JMT-16 tricycles, perfect for navigating the hilly coastal areas and sandy beaches around their new home.

"Some of the Spanish roads can be a bit challenging and undulating to say the least… Our trikes have allowed us to see more of the real Estepona community than just being another tourist. Even a cycle to the local ironmongers has been a pleasure rather than a chore."

The couple now enjoy everything from short trips to the local shops and cafes to evening cycles along the illuminated promenade, soaking in the sea views, fountains, and the vibrant community.

"We may not be exploring the world but three wheels – six wheels – have given us back our independence and a much better view of our little corner of the world. I feel very blessed to be 'living the dream' and in part made possible by Jorvik."
