Top safety tips when cycling
At Jorvik, we know that riding a tricycle, feeling the breeze gently pass you by, the smell of cut grass, and the rumble of the pavement beneath brings so much joy. The feeling of freedom as it’s always been.
However, it is true that we all must remember that it’s super important to be as safe as possible when riding a trike. No one wants accidents to happen whether you're trying to get from A to B or are on a beautiful scenic ride. We always create our tricycles with your safety in mind, but we thought some tips on trike safety would never go amiss.
Here are five of our top tips for safety when you're out and about, it's always good to be prepared!
Always wear a helmet. Quite possibly the most obvious and well-known. Wearing a helmet is always a great idea when riding as it protects your head in case of any accidents on the road. While helmets are not legally required, they can protect arguably the most important part of your body when you need them too. You can also buy some very comfortable and stylish protective helmets from our website.
We found out that Lancaster is the safest city to cycle in and to no surprise, London is one of the most dangerous cities to cycle in.
Always keep your wits about you when you are riding on a road. Keep up to date with road safety rules and be aware of other drivers on the road. You should always be very conscious of your surroundings and who else might be on the road. Due to the extra wheel tricycles are much wider, so it’s imperative to be aware and to always make sure that you are giving road users, cyclists and pedestrians a wide berth.
Be prepared. Preparation is paramount when cycling to ensure that you never get stuck somewhere you aren’t familiar with and don’t have the tools you need. Making a list of things to take with you on your venture will go a long way. We recommend including a tire pump, a puncture repair kit, and a lock for your bike to keep it secure. It might also be a good idea if you are riding one of our electrical trikes, that you carry a spare battery whenever you ride. Being prepared will always increase the safety and often the enjoyment of your trip.
Always take extra care when riding in the dark. Obviously, it can be much harder to spot cyclists at night when it’s dark. You don’t need to break the bank on safety clothing. A simple, high-quality Hi-Visibility vest and reflective armbands will do the trick. Wear them when you are riding your trike at night, or when cycling in the darker months so that road users and pedestrians can easily see you. This should massively decrease the risk of any bad accidents or possible injuries happening to you and others during your journey.
Choose a trike that best suits your needs. For example, if you are the more adventuring, fun-loving type and you love to go off the beaten track then browse our Jorvik mountain trikes for sale. You can trust that you are in the safest of hands whilst off-roading and having the time of your life! Non-mountain tricycles will not have the same grip and suspension in their wheels compared to mountain trikes, so it is definitely important to pick up a model that you feel happy, safe, comfortable, and secure on.
