At Jorvik Tricycles, we design our electric tricycles to be accessible, confidence-boosting and enjoyable for as many people as possible. From adventurous riders to those seeking extra stability or mobility support, our tricycles are built to suit a wide range of ages and abilities.

That said, there are a few legal requirements in the UK that determine who can ride an electric tricycle on public roads and cycle paths. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Makes an Electric Tricycle an EAPC?

For an electric tricycle to qualify as an EAPC (Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycle) in the UK, it must meet all of the following criteria:

·      The motor has a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts

·      Electrical pedal assistance does not exceed 15.5mph (25 km/h)

·      Walk mode throttle (if applicable to your model) does not exceed 3.7mph

What are the EAPC Age Requirements?

Electric tricycles in the UK are classed under the same legislation as electric bicycles, known as EAPCs. Because of this, our 250W electric tricycles don’t require a licence, registration or vehicle tax, but there is a minimum age requirement.

You must be 14 years old to legally ride an electric tricycle on public roads or cycle paths in the UK.

There is no upper age limit. Many of our riders discover electric tricycles later in life, whether they’re returning to cycling, managing mobility challenges, or simply looking for a more comfortable and stable way to get out and about.

Do You Need a Licence or Insurance to Ride?

250w Jorvik electric tricycles are fully compliant with EAPC regulations, which means:

·      No driving licence required

·      No insurance required

·      No vehicle tax

·      No registration needed

This makes electric tricycles an ideal option for people who don’t drive, can’t drive, or are looking for an affordable and accessible way to travel independently.

While wearing a helmet isn’t a legal requirement, we always recommend it for safety, just as you would on a standard bicycle. We stock a range of helmets in our accessories section.

Do Electric Tricycles Move Without Any Pedalling?

Yes, our tricycles offer the walk mode throttle designed for tootling along at a walking pace, getting started, or even just on flat ground, however this isn’t to be used on hills.

In Summary...

To ride a 250w Jorvik electric tricycle in a public place in the UK, you must be 14 years old or over. There’s no upper age limit, and our tricycles are used by people of all ages - whether for leisure, independence, adventure or improved mobility.

With no licence, insurance, tax or registration required, a Jorvik tricycle offers a simple, accessible and confidence-inspiring way to get moving again on three wheels.
