Every journey we make leaves a footprint. For many of us, short trips to the shops, the park, or a friend’s house are still made by car, even when the distance is easily manageable by other means. Over time, these everyday journeys add up, contributing to traffic congestion, air pollution and noise in our communities.

In the UK alone, transport is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for around a quarter of the country’s total emissions. Domestic transport emissions increased again in 2021, producing over 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Much of this comes from local, short-distance travel, the kind of journeys many of us make without thinking.

Cycling and tricycle riding offer a gentler alternative for both us and the world around us.

Rethinking everyday travel

Road traffic doesn’t just affect the climate; it also impacts the air we breathe. Transport accounts for around a third of nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions in the UK, as well as a significant share of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which is linked to respiratory and heart conditions.

These pollutants are most concentrated in towns and cities, where traffic is densest, and people live closest to busy roads. Choosing a tricycle for local journeys removes emissions altogether. No fumes, no fuel and no idling in traffic, just fresh air, steady movement and a quieter presence on the road.

For many riders, especially those who feel less confident on two wheels, a tricycle opens the possibility of replacing car journeys that once felt unavoidable.

Making sustainable travel more accessible

Sustainability should be achievable for everyone, not just confident cyclists or commuters. Electric tricycles provide added stability, comfort and control, making them a practical option for people who may struggle with balance, mobility or confidence.

Electric assistance further widens that accessibility. Hills, longer distances and even windy weather become manageable, meaning riders are more likely to choose their trike over a car. When more people feel able to leave the car at home, the impact can be significant.

Quieter roads, healthier communities

Traffic doesn’t only pollute the air; it shapes how our neighbourhoods feel. Studies have shown that a large proportion of adults in England are exposed to long-term road traffic noise levels above what’s considered comfortable, contributing to sleep disturbance, stress and reduced quality of life.

Cycling and tricycling help reduce that constant background noise. Fewer cars mean quieter streets, more pleasant outdoor spaces and environments that feel safer and more welcoming for everyone.

Small changes, meaningful impact

Switching even one or two journeys a week from car to trike can make a difference. Less traffic means lower emissions, cleaner air and quieter roads, benefits felt not just by riders, but by entire communities.

At Jorvik, we see sustainability not as perfection, but as progress. Choosing three wheels is often about freedom and independence, but it’s also a step towards cleaner air and quieter streets; one journey at a time.
