Cycling is often celebrated for its physical benefits, but for many people, its impact on mental wellbeing is just as powerful. At Jorvik, we regularly hear from riders who tell us that getting back on three wheels didn’t just help their body, it helped them feel like themselves again.

Whether it’s rebuilding confidence after illness, coping with loss of independence or simply finding joy outdoors once more, a tricycle can play a meaningful role in supporting mental health.

Clarity and calm

Gentle, rhythmic movement has a well-known calming effect on the mind. Pedalling encourages the release of endorphins, helping to ease stress, lift mood and reduce feelings of anxiety. Being outdoors adds another benefit - fresh air, daylight and a change of scenery can all help clear the head.

For Nick, a former long-distance cyclist who was told he may never walk again after a serious spinal injury, getting back out on a tricycle wasn’t about fitness alone. It was about reconnecting with something that had once brought him peace and purpose. “Getting back out there feels incredible,” he told us. “The trike gives me freedom again.”

That sense of calm and clarity is something many riders describe after time away from cycling, especially following a life-changing event.

Confidence without pressure

A loss of balance, mobility or confidence can have a profound effect on mental wellbeing. Activities that once felt effortless can suddenly feel risky or overwhelming, leading many people to withdraw from the things that they enjoy.

For Steve, a keen cyclist whose balance issues progressed to the point where he struggled to walk unaided, this loss of confidence was deeply unsettling. Discovering a tricycle gave him a way to stay active without fear of falling, and that reassurance made all the difference. “It’s been incredible for me mentally to get back outside and boost my wellbeing,” he said.

The added stability of three wheels removes pressure and worry, allowing riders to relax into the experience and focus on enjoyment rather than fear.

Independence and self-belief

Mental wellbeing is closely tied to independence. When people lose the ability to travel freely, whether through age, illness or injury, it can lead to frustration, isolation and low mood.

David, who began riding a Jorvik tricycle at the age of 88 after giving up driving and cycling due to balance issues, describes his e-trike as “an essential feature of my life.” Being able to get out independently again, to visit local spots, run errands or simply enjoy the outdoors, gave him renewed confidence and a sense of purpose.

That independence, even in small daily moments, can have a powerful impact on how people feel about themselves and their place in the world.

Purpose, routine and joy

Cycling and tricycling also bring structure to the day. A planned ride creates routine, something to look forward to and a reason to get outdoors. For many riders, it becomes a regular ritual, not a chore, but a source of enjoyment.

From gentle neighbourhood rides to longer scenic routes, tricycling offers a way to reconnect with hobbies, landscapes and communities that may have felt out of reach before.

More than a ride

At Jorvik, we see time and again that our tricycles offer far more than a way to get from A to B. They help people rebuild confidence, regain independence and support their mental wellbeing – especially during times of change.

Whether someone is recovering from an injury or illness, adapting to a health condition or simply looking for a safer, more comfortable way to ride, three wheels can open the door to renewed freedom and joy.
